Interview with Perzephone

It’s time for another interview, this time with Perzephone! A cosplayer from Washington, she has an amazing personality and collection of costumes!

What’s your cosplay alias and why did you choose it?
Perzephone, it has been my online handle since I was playing Everquest and it has stuck since.

How many years have you been cosplaying and what got you started?
I have been cosplaying since 2008, but I didn’t realize I was cosplaying when I first made my Chun Li costume for Halloween back in 1999 (I just made myself feel old, lol).

What has been some of your favorite things to work with when constructing costumes and why?
So far I love using stretch cotton sateen fabric, and if I have enough money, duponi silk. These fabrics are the easiest to work with and don’t make my life a living mess. For jewelry making, when I need a jewel that I can’t find, I use resin which is fun to use.

What are you excited to be working with in the future and why?
Well it was EL Tape and feathers, but I am now making my Tron & Aion cosplays, which are for Sakura Con next month!

What are some of the traits you like to see in other costumes and who do you think does well in them?
I love to see details on cosplays, either it being mine or someone else’s. I love how my friends that have been cosplaying longer than me make their cosplays come alive!

What is your view of the “cosplay scene”?
There are some folks who take it way too seriously. It is just a hobby and we all should just have fun and leave all the drama at home.

What are some of the things you want to see change in the scene?
No more glompers please! I’ve seen glompers run up to their favorite character and don’t realize that if they hug or want to touch a part of the costume, they might ruin or break it, and it sucks since your walking around con with a part of your costume ruined. All that hard work ruined. : (

What is some advice you could give people starting to get into cosplay?
Take it easy with your first cosplay and work your way up to more difficult ones.

What are some of your favorite conventions you’ve attended and why?
So far, SakuraCon, PAX, Emerald City Comic Con, and Aki Con. These cons are so much fun, as I love to see my friends that I haven’t seen in a long time. I also love seeing some of the guests that they have, as well as seeing other attendees show off their hard work and meeting new friends. 😀 I also hope to attend AX, Fanime, SDCC & Dragon Con.

Give a random fact about one of your costumes that you’re proud of!
When I was making Rydia, I decided to moosh the DS, Old School with a splash of After Years together. I then came up with teenager Rydia, which I thought “hey this is what she would look like during the years she was missing!” It came out beautifully and I love this cosplay 🙂 as it was one of my mash up designs. 😀
