Contests can cause quite a conundrum, whether they be at the convention itself to ones held online or stores. First, you have to examine your reasoning as to why you’re entering any contest. Some people do it for the potential prizes, some for the claiming of the “best”, while others do it simply for fun. Then you have to react to the outcome, and this is where drama can be born.
When I enter contests, I always do it with something I’m proud of, something I’ve put many hours of work into. I always make sure I’m entering with friends who have also worked hard on their costumes, and first and foremost, are in it to have fun. If we win, stupendous! If we don’t, oh well! Yes, when you lose, you get jealous. This is completely normal, as long as you don’t say it aloud… Keep it to yourself. Congratulate who won, talk to them about their costume, and make a friend out of the situation. Ignore the negativity and embrace the positive, because everyone works hard when they compete. There will always be winners and losers, but perhaps it can be made into a win or loss between pals.
The same thing goes with contests outside of conventions. Those prizes can be awesome, but you could make some awesome lifelong friends, and really, who doesn’t like that?
