It’s time for another interview, this time with BalthierFlare! She’s a talented cosplayer from Maryland, who has awesome costumes, including her own “collection” of Rikku ones!
What’s your cosplay alias and why did you choose it?
BalthierFlare; it was a culmination of ideas… mostly when I was younger. I asked my friend how to make a username and we thought of combining two things we liked. At that moment, I loved Final Fantasy 9’s flare spell and I was also playing Final Fantasy 12 and obsessed with Balthier… so it worked out that way.
How many years have you been cosplaying and what got you started?
About 3 or 4 years I have been cosplaying. I got started because my best friend (the one who helped me make my username! :D) mentioned her older brother’s going to a convention nearby. We decided to go, and upon further research, we discovered cosplay! I wanted to try it and got hooked.
What has been some of your favorite things to work with when constructing costumes and why?
I love craft foam for some undying reason… perhaps that it is SO CHEAP. Haha, you can make so much with it! I love buying a ton of sheets and just messing around to see what I can make.
What are you excited to be working with in the future and why?
I’m very excited to expand my horizons… any new material is exciting for me! Definitely body paint is something I’ve always wanted to do (and will be working with very, very soon)
What are some of the traits you like to see in other costumes and who do you think does well in them?
Hmm I love seeing brilliant make-up. As for who does them well, just about any well-known cosplayer knows their way around make-up, one of my very favorites is Naokunn on dA!
What is your view of the “cosplay scene”?
Ahhh well I am not fully sure! I try to branch out but mostly stick in my group of friends… overall I think it is a very friendly community. There are so many people willing to help and give advice! Lots of people at cons love to meet new people so I love that!
What are some of the things you want to see change in the scene?
I wish some people would be more open about how they used a certain material, and not keep it a sort of secret. I’ve never encountered this personally, so I’m not sure if the issue is at hand. But I think we should all help each other out 🙂
What is some advice you could give people starting to get into cosplay?
RESEARCH. Plan! Think about everything before you dive in. Bring references when you go fabric shopping. The quality of your fabric and the fabric choice are essential! All of your materials are essential. Wig + good make-up + prop truly help a costume look so much better. Also practice posing 🙂
What are some of your favorite conventions you’ve attended and why?
Katsucon is my favorite con! I love the setting; the National Harbor is truly beautiful. While I love big cons, Katsu is a great size and I mainly go for cosplay, so all of the locations available are amazing!
Give a random fact about one of your costumes that you’re proud of!
….Hmmmm…. I made my Wedding dress Yuna wings with a base spring from a sofa, haha.
