It’s time for another interview, this time with Grell! She’s a newer cosplayer from Washington, who is excited to make more costumes!
What’s your cosplay alias and why did you choose it?
Grell from “Kuroshitsuji”. I’ve always had a soft spot for the character and I feel like I can really relate to Grell, almost as if he/she is a part of me. Not to mention I’m a redhead at heart. 😉
How many years have you been cosplaying and what got you started?
Believe it or not, I’ve only been cosplaying for about a year. But I’ve done costume related things and theatre performances practically my whole life.
What has been some of your favorite things to work with when constructing costumes and why?
I really love that feeling when you’re doing the very last stitches and the huge sigh of relief you breathe when you finally finish, but of course everybody enjoys that. 🙂 Styling wigs is definitely up there with my favorites, though.
What are you excited to be working with in the future and why?
I’ve got a lot of plans for the future cosplays, frankly because I love the hobby! It mixes together various art forms, and brings people from all different walks of life together… I would never have met some of my best friends if I had never started cosplaying.
What are some of the traits you like to see in other costumes and who do you think does well in them?
Attention to detail! Even down to the tiniest button! I love seeing any well-made costume…. I personally think the people who act “in character” and can do it well are some of the best cosplayers out there. You can’t have one without the other; it’d be like having milk without cookies!
What is your view of the “cosplay scene”?
One word…. AMAZING.
What are some of the things you want to see change in the scene?
Death to the weaboos?
What is some advice you could give people starting to get into cosplay?
Don’t be afraid of failure, keep an open mind, and ALWAYS pre-register for EVERY con (I learned that the hard way).
What are some of your favorite conventions you’ve attended and why?
Sakuracon and Akicon. I met some of my best friends and my lover at these cons, and it was the thrill of being at cons and the feedback that I got that made me decide to continue attending cons and cosplaying.
Give a random fact about one of your costumes that you’re proud of!
Grell is actually one of the only cosplays I own. 🙂 You can expect to see many more from me soon!
Thanks for the interview, Grell! You can see more of her work on her Deviantart!
