Interview with KaniDay

It’s time for another interview, this time with KaniDay! She’s a talented cosplayer from Alabama, who loves just having fun and checking out lots of conventions!

What’s your cosplay alias and why did you choose it?
KaniDay! Kani was my roleplaying name back in the day and I thought she was bright, so I went with it! (Also I love kani sushi XD)

How many years have you been cosplaying and what got you started?
11 years now? Wow! Support from my mom got me into it! She told me about cons and cosplayers when I was 12 and… The rest is history!

What has been some of your favorite things to work with when constructing costumes and why?
I believe that anyone can be a cosplayer regardless of skill level. I do not make most of my costumes, but I have had a lot of fun with styling! Wigs and makeup are the fun part for me, or finding the right accessory in the wild of a thrift store!

What are you excited to be working with in the future and why?
I really want to work more with wigs and battle makeup… That would be so cool…

What are some of the traits you like to see in other costumes and who do you think does well in them?
Oh I love seeing bright colors and fabrics and detailed makeup! Crashcandy Cosplay is a QUEEN at this! I also love wigs that are perfectly spiked or fluffed… Like, popped out of the cartoon!

What is your view of the “cosplay scene”?
Hmm… I think there is a lot of effort in it, and a large desire for recognition professionally or otherwise. That’s not necessarily bad, but it has changed. I still think it is welcoming and cosplayers are willing to stand up for others, and that is beautiful to see new cosplayers especially POC/LGBTQ+ feel like they have a safe place to express themselves freely. That’s what cosplay is all about.

What are some of the things you want to see change in the scene?
I would like to see cosplayers not be afraid to express their other interests. Cosplayers are people too, not just a brand to consume so don’t get stressed about it I guess. ^^ I cosplay, but I am also an actress and convention staff and I may not be the best cosplayers, but gosh darn it, I have fun!

What is some advice you could give people starting to get into cosplay?
Find characters that speak to you! Whether you have fun looking like them, or putting your own twist on something do what feels right and good. Surround yourself with people that support you and will stay up until 2 am eating ramen in your hotel room (that’s just life advice though, haha)!

What are some of your favorite conventions you’ve attended and why?
AWA, Kami Con, and Momo Con! Easily top 3! I have been going to AWA for 10 years and Kami Con since year 2! Momo Con has only been on my radar for a few years now, but all of these cons are made for weebs like me! ❤ They celebrate the new media I love and focus on anime; I’m not really a fan of comic books so I love having a con that really celebrates what I’m into! ❤

Give a random fact about one of your costumes that you’re proud of!
I made my Wonder Woman from scratch! I don’t do that often, but yeah it’s mostly hot glue, lol! 😀
