It’s time for another interview, this time with HammSammich! She’s a relatively newer cosplayer from Kentucky, who is quite the Resident Evil fan!
What’s your cosplay alias and why did you choose it?
I go by HammSammich or Hammie for short. My last name is Hamm and growing up my Dad always called me Hammbone, Hammie, or HammSammich. So that’s where my oddball alias comes from.
How many years have you been cosplaying and what got you started?
I always wanted to cosplay before I even knew what it was. Ever since I was a little kid, I dreamed of dressing up as my favorite video game, anime, cartoon, etc. characters. When I discovered the world of cosplay when I was in high school, it was like an absolute dream come true! The very first convention I cosplayed at was OMGcon 2010 when I was fresh out of high school where I wore my very first cosplay ever (Misty from Pokemon).
What has been some of your favorite things to work with when constructing costumes and why?
I’ve always loved to paint! I always look for the opportunity to implement painting when it comes to making cosplays. I’ve freehand painted multiple vests, jackets, and other bits of clothing for my cosplays.
What are you excited to be working with in the future and why?
I hope to try my hand a prop making more soon. I’m going to be cosplaying some characters in the future that have signature weapons and I really want to have props made of their weapons. I’ve dabbled in it before, but I’ve never really given it my 100%. I want to try my best to extend my abilities and to learn as much as I possibly can!
What are some of the traits you like to see in other costumes and who do you think does well in them?
The main thing that I love to see in other cosplayers’ costumes is pure fandom passion and there are three in particular that I follow on deviantART who I find absolutely amazing and truly inspiring: ChaoticClaire, BiohazardBeauty, and BlackPatchouly. These ladies are incredible. They never cease to blow my mind! They are truly dedicated to their craft and the fandoms that they cosplay from!
What is your view of the “cosplay scene”?
The “cosplay scene” has become like a second family to me. If it weren’t for the amazing people that I met because of cosplay, I wouldn’t be the person that I am today. I’ve been able to come out of my shell, to finally accept who I am and to love myself. The friends that I’ve made because of cosplay have been the absolute best friends that I could have ever asked for. I even met my fiancé because of cosplay! It’s a community that I’m deeply proud to be a part of.
What are some of the things you want to see change in the scene?
Less exclusion and more inclusion. Cosplay is for everyone no matter age, sex, height, weight, or ethnicity.
What is some advice you could give people starting to get into cosplay?
Don’t let anyone stop you from pursuing your cosplay goals! Like I said before, cosplay is for everyone! There are no restrictions or requirements to enjoy this absolutely amazing hobby! Anyone can cosplay any character that their heart desires. So get out there and cosplay to your heart’s content!
What are some of your favorite conventions you’ve attended and why?
Every con that I’ve been to thus far has been my favorite! Life can be so overly stressful and just plain exhausting. When I get the chance to attend a con and cosplay, it’s like I take on a whole new life. I become someone new and I can briefly live in a world where I’m free from all of my troubles and daily headaches.
Give a random fact about one of your costumes that you’re proud of!
The shoulder holster that I wear with my Resident Evil 2 Claire Redfield cosplay was made from my fiancé’s Resident Evil 4 Leon S. Kennedy cosplay’s shoulder holster. He cut it down and had it custom fit to my shoulders. He sacrificed a part of his signature cosplay so I could complete my dream cosplay.
